A 25-year-old Venezuelan man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering New York teen Sheridan Gorman, who was walking with friends near the Loyola University Chicago campus. The man has not been formally charged and his name has not been released. The suspect was wearing black clothing and a black mask when he shot Gorman Thursday. The shooter was identified because he was seen visibly limping on surveillance footage. It was unclear whether the Venezuelan man was in the United States legally or how long he had been in the United States. The Chicago Tribune reported that the suspect had previously been arrested in Cook County on a misdemeanor charge of shoplifting at a Macy’s department store in June 2023. A police report obtained by the Tribune did not provide details about the shooting, stating only that Rogers Park (Precinct 24) police found Gorman on the pier at Loyola Beach in Rogers Park with a gunshot wound to his back. Police found a shell casing about 40 feet away from Gorman’s body, the report said. She was walking with friends when a gunman walked up to them, pulled out a weapon and shot them, police said in a statement.Sheridan was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the back. She spent the early hours of Thursday morning searching for the Northern Lights with her friends. “She was exactly where she was supposed to be — close to campus, surrounded by friends, and living her life,” her family said in a statement. “What happened to Sheridan cannot be chalked up to someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” the statement said. “This is not an abstract concept. This is the loss of a daughter. The loss of a sister. The loss of a future full of milestones that will now never come. Our family is forever changed.”
