You know, he was a little cocky and I’ve told him that before. I’ve said that in a lot of interviews. Now we all laugh about it,” de Villiers said.
However, the Proteas legend was quick to clarify that this perceived arrogance was actually a mirror image of his own character. “I say cocky because I probably see something similar in him; that’s competitive drive,” he added. “It’s something you’re born with and I don’t like losing and nothing can change that. So when I initially met Virat, I probably saw that in him.”As the two spent more time together on the international circuit, the ice began to melt. De Villiers pointed out that beneath the aggressive exterior is a cricketer who has a strong sense of responsibility for the team.“Then in the second or third meeting, hearing his voice and hearing him speak, I thought, oh, well, he’s also a guy, you know, just a good guy, with a strong drive to want to perform for his country and win Test cricket,” he added. The foundation of their legendary RCB partnership was actually laid during a tense Test match at Rangers after RCB selected Kohli. Despite being in the heat of international duty, Kohli extended a helping hand to his future teammates.“I remember in that tunnel, he came up to me and he said, ‘I’m so excited to have you on our team.'” We had a little bit of a good vibe, like we were going to be good friends. During the Test match, we would barely speak to each other and he just said, ‘Yeah, I’m glad we found you.’ I thought, OK, this guy actually likes me and we might be able to be a couple,” de Villiers recalled.
