Fort Bend County Judge KP George, a prominent Indian-American Democrat, was found guilty of money laundering for stealing donor funds by twice transferring $46,500 from a campaign account to a personal account. However, his lawyers argued it was not theft but repayment. George faced two felony charges of money laundering and was convicted of a third-degree felony, punishable by two to 10 years in prison.According to the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office, George will not be removed from office until the trial is completed, which is when he is sentenced. George can be removed from office at that time, but he can continue to serve as judge if he appeals the verdict. However, the District Attorney’s Office may request a stay. The defense countered that George loaned his own money to his campaign and later repaid it himself, a practice his lawyers said was common and legal. His legal team also argued the case was politically motivated, claiming the district attorney’s office targeted George and then worked backwards to find charges against him. This isn’t George’s first run-in with the law. He was indicted in 2023, along with her former chief of staff, Taral Patel, on charges of creating false racist attacks against George’s 2022 campaign by creating fraudulent social media accounts.
