At first glance, the Caspian Sea looks like an endless ocean stretching to the horizon, lapping at the shores of five countries. However, scientists do not classify it as an ocean, but rather as the largest lake on Earth, a massive inland lake with an area of ​​approximately 371,000 square kilometers, which is larger than Japan. It spans Europe and Asia and borders Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran. Its vast territory, unique chemistry and geopolitical significance make it one of the most fascinating geographical wonders on Earth. From ancient Silk Road commerce to modern oil pipelines, the Caspian Sea has profoundly shaped the region’s historical, economic and ecological narratives. Still, its status as a lake-sea hybrid, its lucrative caviar trade and its key role in global energy politics remain little known.
