After a dismal T20 World Cup, Pakistan cricket has once again sparked controversy with reports that an unnamed team member has been fined for allegedly behaving inappropriately with a female hotel staff member during a stay in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The report added that the staff member “shouted for help, following which hotel staff rushed to her rescue and reported the matter to Pakistan team manager Navid Cheema.”

Senior officials at the Golden Crown Hotel reportedly want strict action against the player. However, Cheema apologized to the hotel management on behalf of the cricketers and imposed a fine for the misconduct, effectively resolving the internal issues at the time. While the player’s identity has not yet been revealed, the matter is far from over and the player is expected to face further scrutiny upon his return. The report suggests that the player may be summoned by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s disciplinary committee, which may decide on additional penalties. The controversy surfaced soon after Pakistan’s disappointing campaign, which saw the team fail to reach the semi-finals due to a net run-rate defeat despite beating Sri Lanka by five runs in the final match of the Super Eights. The incident also reignited discussions surrounding past controversies involving Pakistan touring teams. Reports pointed out that batsman Haider Ali was arrested by Manchester police on rape charges during Pakistan Shaheen’s tour of the UK last year, but was released due to insufficient evidence. In another earlier episode, it was reported that team masseuse Malang Ali was fined for inappropriate behavior with a female staff member during a trip to Malaysia.
